Quebec has a substantial religious heritage and this aspect of Quebec culture is magnificently represented in each of the province’s regions. The Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec promotes the enhancement of Quebec’s religious heritage. Each church, basilica, cathedral and oratory is unique. Some are majestic and even imposing; others are more modest and very old, but all tell of religious devotion and of their creator’s great talent, in their architecture and décor, and in the bells, carillons and organs that they hold. Several churches and religious sites have been classified as historic monuments and are an inseparable part of the urban and rural landscapes where they are found. For example, Montréal’s countless churches are the reason behind the cities nickname, “city of 100 steeples!” Some religious sites shelter magnificent gardens—perfect for walks—or small museums that recount the colony’s beginnings; others are true havens of peace, located far from big metropolitan centres.
