A museum with a sublime view of the St. Lawrence River, the Biophare (website in French only) in Montérégie offers a unique look at the region’s natural and human heritage through exhibitions, events and nautical excursions.

Enjoy a wonderful nature ride

To discover the unsuspected wealth of wetland flora and fauna, from majestic birds to impressive trees perched high above the water, the ideal way is aboard the Randonnée nature (or “nature ride”). This boat ride invites you to explore the Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve. Enjoy an amazing excursion into a labyrinth of channels around an archipelago made up of a hundred or so islands of lush vegetation. You’ll be guided by an experienced captain-guide, who will share his knowledge of this exceptional environment. These rides take place throughout the day, in the morning, afternoon and, for a romantic experience with a spectacular sunset, in the evening.

Visit the exhibits

Explore the region’s history and biodiversity in Biophare’s various exhibits, each presenting a unique perspective. Allégories biocentriques (Biocentric Allegories), a temporary exhibition running until October 2024, unveils the works of Serge Roy, a local contemporary artist who draws his creativity from the discovery of artificial or natural objects. The works are presented in the form of small immersive installations made from reused materials. And to discover the features that led to the region’s recognition by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, be sure to stop by the Lac Saint-Pierre observatory. This permanent exhibition will be completely renewed in 2025 to offer a never-before-seen portrait of the region’s riches.

Guided tours of the Biophare

Make your Biophare experience even more rewarding by exploring the exhibits on a guided tour. During the summer season, three departures are scheduled every day. There are also guided tours with a literary focus, to discover the city of Sorel-Tracy through the works of several authors who were born there or lived here. One of the authors highlighted is Germaine Guèvremont, who famously wrote the novel Le Survenant (English title: The Outlander). Tours depart daily at 10 a.m.
