Planning a family trip in the Outaouais region or around Ottawa this summer? The Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum are must-see museums for kids and parents interested in history! The first one showcases the rich history of the country and its people through key events and influential figures, while the second one focuses on the how war affects the human experience. But beyond the exhibits themselves, these museums also offer special events and other things to do to complement your museum outing!

Enjoy some refreshments at the museum

After your visit to the museum, take a break on the patio! During the summer, from Thursday to Saturday, the Canadian Museum of History welcomes you to the comfortable and relaxed Panorama Patio to enjoy something to drink and some snacks while admiring the view. The Canadian War Museum, meanwhile, offers a BBQ on the patio! From Thursday to Sunday, savour delicious BBQ favourites or indulge in Le Café’s tempting menu, featuring salads and wraps, as well as classic pizzas, poutines and hamburgers.

Festival venues!

Summer is festival season, and both the History and the War museums will be hosting special events on their sites throughout the summer. The Great Outdoor’s Comedy Festival takes place August 9-11 on LeBreton Flats, adjacent to the Canadian War Museum, while the Canadian Museum of History hosts two major events: Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy fireworks shows presented on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from July 31 to August 17, and, a little later in the season, from September 6 to 8, the 11th edition of the Riverside Festival, featuring electronic music and light shows.

Take a bike (or a boat!) to the museums

Combine your visit to the museums with a boat ride or cycling activity! Younger visitors will love the water taxi, a shuttle service linking the Canadian Museum of History, the Ottawa Locks, Richmond Landing near the Canadian War Museum and, since June, the National Capital Commission’s Riverfront House. Cyclists will want to discover the Voyageurs Pathway, a 30-km bike path along the Ottawa River that offers breathtaking views of Parliament Hill and the Canadian Museum of History.
