Planning a getaway on the magnificent island of Anticosti, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site? A gourmet stop at Ferme Ostréicole Manowin is a must during your trip to Côte-Nord! Located approximately 17 km west of Port-Menier, in L’Anse-aux-Fraises, this oyster farm uses a farming technique that’s unlike any other in Quebec and the result of three years of experimentation. Delve into the world of oyster farming this summer with a fascinating guided tour and mouth-watering oyster tasting!

About the oyster farm

Ferme Ostréicole Manowin is the only aquaculture company in Quebec dedicated to harvesting American oysters using off-bottom cultivation. Among other things, this method simplifies the harvesting process and provides a suitable environment for oysters to grow. In collaboration with Sépaq, the farm also offers a guided tour of the site, allowing visitors to explore the world of oyster farming and learn more about the history of old L’Anse-aux-Fraises.

What to expect on the guided tour

On this fascinating tour, you’ll learn about the history of the village and the reef’s marine life during an interpretative activity led by a bilingual guide. And of course, you’ll tour the oyster farm! At the end of the visit, you can sample fresh oysters with distinctive Anticosti notes, paired with a delicious glass of sparkling wine. Be sure to reserve your spot with Sépaq at the Auberge Port-Menier reception desk (in-person or by phone). Transportation from Auberge Port-Menier to L’Anse-aux-Fraises is included.

Eco-friendly boxes for the win!

The farm’s oysters are packaged in boxes made from larch wood, a species that grows in abundance on the island. The wood is cut onsite, then assembled by hand in the workshop. In some cases, boxes are made from pieces of Eastern white cedar found washed up on the beach. To minimize waste, the wood residue is used to heat the workshop, and the shavings are used as bedding for the rabbits and chickens. This eco-friendly solution reduces the need to import packaging to the island.

In addition, you can return the boxes to be refilled or reused. Each box is laser-engraved with the company logo, eliminating the need for ink. What better way to enjoy delicious oysters and help the environment at the same time?
