The Citadelle de Québec and Royal 22e Régiment Museum

Start from up above!

A great way to start your trip is by visiting the lookout at Observatoire de la Capitale. Perched on the 31st floor of the Marie-Guyart Building, 221 meters (725 ft.) up, it provides a breathtaking view of the whole city and the majestic St. Lawrence River. Inside you’ll find the Horizons exhibition, an original presentation that looks at the identity, history and culture of Québec City.

Military history

A key feature of the history of Québec City is its military past. At the Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site of Canada, follow the 4.6 km (2.9 mi.) of fortifications that still surround the city.

Continue your visit at the Citadelle de Québec and Royal 22e Régiment Museum and see the permanent exhibition of the only French-language infantry regiment of the Canadian Forces. There are also military demonstrations held during the summer and a magnificent view to admire from the top of Cap-Diamant. The Residence of the Governor General is also located on the grounds and is an exceptional heritage site to visit.

Musée du Fort

Directly beside the Citadelle you’ll find the Plains of Abraham, the legendary site of many clashes between the British and French Empires. Nowadays this valuable historic site turned urban park is enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts all year round. Your next stop is at the Musée de la civilisation, known for being the most visited museum in Québec City. With original and bold exhibitions, the museum transports you into the great cities of the world, fascinating ancient civilizations, significant sociocultural movements and the heart of Quebec society. Another worthwhile museum is the Musée des Ursulines – just a short walk away – with a permanent exhibition on the topic of women’s education and another that looks at the story of the building itself, which is one of the most beautiful examples of conventual architecture in North America.

And for tourists who love paintings, sculpture and photography, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is a four-pavilion museum that hosts international exhibitions and houses a collection of more than 40,000 works of art. This museum is also dedicated to promoting and preserving Quebec art from every period.
